How to Choose PU Materials for Shoe Linings

Choose PU shoe lining materials by the shoe component, backing, thickness and feel, then assess a physical sample in the intended construction. A material that looks suitable in a photograph is not automatically suitable for a collar, tongue or full lining. The selection should also cover the buyer’s specified tests and the exact article available to order.

Define where the lining will be used

Start with the component rather than the category name. Send a marked shoe photograph or drawing showing whether the material is intended for the collar, tongue, heel area or another lining panel. State which side will face the foot and what other layers it will be assembled with.

For example, a request for “black PU lining” leaves several decisions open. A more useful brief identifies the shoe type, component, preferred feel, target thickness, backing reference and estimated quantity. Include a reference sample if one exists; do not treat this example as a recommended specification for every sports shoe.

Compare the actual structure

Microfiber PU, imitation microfiber PU and stretch PU are different sourcing groups. Their names alone do not establish lining suitability. Specify testing before approving an article

SATRA’s upper and lining test directory includes abrasion, rubbing colorfastness, water-vapour properties and colorfastness to perspiration. Which checks apply, and their acceptance criteria, must come from the buyer’s requirements and intended footwear.

Send the method, target, conditioning requirements and sample details when requesting documentation. Ask whether available evidence applies to the exact article and construction under consideration. Use a small, traceable comparison set

Label each candidate with its material code and color reference. Keep the face and backing views together, and record why a candidate is accepted or rejected. Trial the shortlisted materials in the intended shoe assembly before confirming the order.

If two candidates feel similar but use different backings, keep them as separate articles. Do not approve one sample and order another solely because both were described as PU lining. Record the approved sample reference in the purchase brief.
