Stretch PU for Footwear: What to Check Before Ordering

When sourcing stretch PU for footwear, confirm the stretch direction, recovery, backing and behavior in the intended shoe construction. Pulling a loose sample by hand is useful for an initial comparison, but it is not a substitute for the buyer’s specified test or an assembly trial.

Start with the panel and cutting direction

Explain where the material will be used. Include a marked photograph or pattern reference showing the panel and its intended movement. A general request for “elastic leather” does not establish whether the buyer needs movement across the panel, along it or in more than one direction.

When sending a physical reference, mark its orientation. Ask for the candidate sample to be marked in the same way. Comparing samples in different orientations can make the selection confusing and can leave the cutting team without a clear instruction.

Check movement and recovery separately

Ask how the stretch requirement will be measured and what recovery is required after the force is removed. Do not assign a numerical stretch percentage from an unmeasured photograph or hand pull. If the supplier provides a figure, request the method and conditions associated with it.

SATRA lists a stretch-recovery method among its upper and lining tests. The buyer should choose a relevant method and acceptance target for the specific application; a category label is not a test result. Youxiang does not claim a catalogue-wide stretch or recovery rating.

Compare the face, backing and edge

Keep appearance and construction decisions separate. If a black candidate matches the color but its backing differs, describe it as an alternative for evaluation rather than an exact replacement.

Trial the material in the planned assembly

Compare the candidate with the intended stitching, adjoining panels and any lamination or adhesive used in the shoe design. The trial should follow the buyer’s production process rather than an improvised pull test. Record the sample code, orientation and assembly used so that a later order can be matched to the approval.

For example, a buyer replacing a material on one flexible panel can send the old sample and a pattern photo, then request candidates to compare in that specific assembly. That brief is more useful than asking which stretch PU is “best” without naming the component.
